You know more than anyone that Taekwon-Do is a way of life. You know how it gets into your bones and it becomes a part of you. However you started, you immersed yourself in it and you became hooked!
So much so, that you wanted to make the amazing benefits and accomplishments you received from training available to others… and you began teaching.
This was the case with my father. I want to share this with you because I’ve seen and heard from instructors around the world who all have a very similar story.
He started his dream of teaching for a living when he opened his first school in a small northwest Phoenix strip mall in 1986. He was (and still is) a great teacher, had the skill and all the passion, drive and determination in the world behind him as he set forth on his journey to become a full time instructor and to teach Taekwon-Do for a living.
This had to work.
This had to work, not only because it was his passion and he was determined to do so, but also because he was the bread winner in the family and that family included two kids and a pregnant wife! THIS HAD TO WORK.
It seemed like he had everything he needed to be successful.
However, what his instructor never told him (and probably didn’t even know himself) was that in order to be a successful school owner he’d have to be as good at running a business as he was at Taekwon-Do.
Unfortunately he wasn’t and I watched for nearly 20 years as my father fought to keep his dream and his school alive. There were times when he needed to take a second job to make ends meet. There were times when he moved from his own location to running everything out of a local health club, and eventually worked back the point where he could move back into his own location again. Things were always tight, but he continued to scrape by, keeping his dream alive and making it work.
You may have a similar story or know someone who does.
I began teaching with him when I turned 16 and quickly noticed that there was much, much more to running a school than just showing up and teaching great classes each night (that was the easy part!).
I slowly picked up some of “the business” of running a school and it looked like something I could do, but I had no desire to live the rest of my life fighting the day to day, uphill struggle that I watched my father endure throughout my childhood. I didn’t need to become a billionaire, but I also didn’t want to HAVE to get a second job or be constantly worried about providing for my family.
I did love Taekwon-Do and wanted to teach, but only if there was another way.
I wanted to teach, I wanted to grow, I wanted to learn what it took to run a school consistently, professionally and profitably!
After many conversations over the years, my father and I came to the conclusion that there was a better, smarter, easier and more profitable way to run a Taekwon-Do school. We just didn’t know what it was… YET!
So we set out on a mission to find that “way”.
We started meeting with and talking to successful martial arts school owners, no matter what martial art they taught. We bought programs, attended seminars and conferences. We did just about anything we could do in order to create success.
What we discovered was truly amazing!
We had no idea of how NOT-business-minded we were. We thought we at least had a handle on some things, but it quickly became evident that we were just flying by the seat of our pants, struggling to make things work and definitely doing things the hard way!
In the years since that harsh reality check, we’ve made simple, yet highly effective changes in how we teach, how we enroll new members and what programs we offer. With my father and I at the helm, our school averaged 18k – 20k a month and peaked out at 35K. Today there are schools that are doing even better.
Also, I can’t leave out that since business has taken off (since 2003), our school has developed eight U.S. Taekwon-Do team members, won 17 medals in World Championship competition and produced six World Champions! So you can see that there’s been NO drop off in the quality of training and what’s being taught.
In fact it’s only made us more successful.
Now, with the 1 TKD Insider, I’m teaching other instructors and sharing the business model we used, designed specifically for ITF Taekwon-Do instructors, to help them become full-time instructors themselves, and achieve their dream of teaching Taekwon-Do for a living!
