Malyasia Festival - ITF Taekwon-Do

The 60th birthday of Taekwon-Do is fast approaching and there are many events popping up around the world to celebrate this momentous occasion. There are very few events that are cause for celebration across the globe, One in particular that caught my eye was the International Taekwon-Do Festival Malaysia 2015.

The theme of the event is “Coming together as ONE for TKD!”

I have to admit I was immediately skeptical because I’ve come across a number of people who say they are all about being inclusive and coming together as long as “coming together” means “join MY organization”.

So I was able to get in contact with Mr. Steven Gomez who is one of the organizers of the event and is also the Country Administrator for A.C.E. Taekwon-Do Malaysia. After a few conversations it was abundantly clear that he was legitimately committed to hosting an incredible event with the sole purpose of celebrating Taekwon-Do that everyone can enjoy, regardless of what organization they belong to.

He also happened to share with me the criticisms he received from others for hosting an open event designed to bring people together, which is unfortunate, but also very predictable coming from those who are still living in the illusion that things should be exactly the way they were 15 years ago.

This 60th Birthday Festival will include plenty of training opportunities including Taekwon-Do Seminars for colored belts and black belts, a National and International Instructor’s Course and a Grading for those looking to promote. There will also be a FREE Anti Doping Talk hosted by Anti Doping Malyasia, a Blood Donation Drive to support the local community and increase community involvement and there will be different martial arts vendors making their products available.

Mr. Gomez felt that Malaysia would be a perfect place to host such an event given the role that it played as one of the founding countries of the ITF back in 1966. General Choi was also the Ambassador of Korea to Malaysia in 1963 and he often called Malaysia his second home where many of the techniques we practice today were created.

The seminars will be led by 9th Dan, Grand Master Paul Cutler who was the first to receive this rank from Grand Master Rhee, Ki Ha. GM Cutler is the founder and president of  Authentic Centers for Excellence of Taekwon-Do, Technical Advisor and Country Chief Instructor of A.C.E. Taekwon-Do.

You can register for the event by downloading the forms from the event’s facebook page (Page name: International Taekwon-Do Festival Malaysia 2015) or you can request invites and application forms by sending an email to itfdojang7215@ymail.com.
