If you hadn’t heard yet, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is on it’s way. Along with a tidal wave of marketing to you’d be crazy not to capitalize on!
Without you doing anything, you’ll probably pic up a few new students just because Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon are spending millions and millions to get people excited about martial arts, and specifically their new movie.
And don’t worry, you won’t have to dress up on a costume or change anything about the way you sign people up or teach. The fact that what the turtles are doing is not necessarily Taekwon-Do means nothing to the average person who knows little about martial arts and is interested in training.
What you will need to do is to start paying attention to the marketing and promotion being done for the movie and looking for opportunities to take advantage of or partner up on.
Here’s a few ideas you could implement with your school:
-TMNT themed Buddy Night
-Do demonstrations at the theater the weekend of the premier
-Set up a booth at the theater
-Have a weapons themed class featuring one or all of the Ninja Turtles weapons
-Do a movie night where you watch one of the previous Ninja Turtle movies
-Have the school get together to go see the new movie
-Hand out Ninja Turtle headbands
I would immediately get in touch with the managers at your local movie theaters and offer up a few ideas. They may even have some ideas of their own, free passes, etc.
Also, be sure to send press releases to your local news outlets and newspapers. When something big like this is being promoted everywhere, they also want to ride the wave and love doing related stories. The fact that you run a Taekwon-Do school makes you a prime target for something like that.
In the past we’ve had the local news come out and shoot a segment for the news cast, we’ve been invited to do live interviews during the program and also had the morning show weather guy out a few times.
The morning show weather guy is a great option because those morning shows are generally 2-3 hours long and the whole time they are using footage of you and your school for bumpers in and out of commercials, they put you in the background while the weather is being done and you usually get one or two longer segments to explain who you are and what you do.
Whether you like this movie or not is irrelevant. It is something you must pay attention to because it is something that is having, and may continue to have a huge impact on our industry.
The opportunities here are endless and only limited by your imagination.
